Applicants can expand their repertoire and hone their orchestral and large-organization experience.
Information and Application Below
2025 Audition Dates and Excerpts
Select and print the audition packet for your instrument.
All applicants (new and returning) must play an in-person audition, including a scale, solo excerpt, and orchestral excerpt.
Your solo excerpt should generally be of a greater technical level than the orchestra excerpt you are auditioning with.
(Summerfest musicians are exempt from playing a live audition, but must still register.)
Please read the audition packet cover page carefully. Select the correct excerpt for your ensemble (violinists should choose between violin 1 or 2, horn players should choose between high or low horn).
Auditions are held Friday-Saturday on two consecutive weekends in August.
If you are physically unable to attend either in-person audition, please e-mail our office. You will be required to record and submit your entire audition by video, then audition in-person on the orientation day.
Please note the Orientation and Reading Rehearsal date. It is mandatory for at least 1 parent to attend the orientation portion (first 15 minutes of rehearsal).

Principal Positions
Principal positions are available to strings, winds, brass, and percussion players in Symphony Orchestra, and to strings players in Preparatory Orchestra.
Principal players receive a wonderful opportunity to hone their leadership and communication skills by having greater interaction with each other and the conductor.
Symphony Orchestra members that play a principal audition are eligible to be selected for the Virtuosi Ensemble, a chamber orchestra of our principal players and upcoming leaders. Virtuosi members play 3 additional concerts per year
(some of which include additional scholarship stipends), including an entire classical symphony, and Handel’s Messiah.
Principal auditions are held in September after rehearsals begin (usually during the second week of rehearsal). Candidates will show exceptional preparation and commitment in their ensembles. The principal audition will include two unprepared excerpts from the entire semester’s repertoire, and two brief interview questions.
If you will be absent for principal auditions, please e-mail our office for instructions.
